Cockatiel Behavior
Kósmos is my first bird and we’ve been together for 2 years now. Of course when I was thinking at what kind of bird I would like, parrots like the African Grey, the Cockatoo, the Conure and other impressive birds came to my mind. The problem is that those parrots should be kept for experts. On the other side, cockatiels, with their gentle and affectionate behavior, make the perfect pet for a young family.
Cockatiels are good for kids
Cockatiels are relatively small parrots and thus are less intimidating to children. Also, cockatiels are very nice birds and rarely bites. I even have to say that my Kósmos bit me only once or twice since I have him and it never hurt me. Parrots like the African Grey can cut off one of your finger if they want to. I believe the cockatiels to be the sweetest birds if you are nice with them also.
Cockatiels can speak and that’s fun
“Allo Kósmos! Comment ça va?” or “Hi Kósmos! How are you?” is what I hear every time I come home (I am French speaking if you didn’t notice my horrible English.) So yes cockatiels can speak few words, just enough to make you smile when you hear them. The problem is that only males can whistle and speak, females sometimes can whistle but that’s it.
Cockatiels are very affectionate birds
Cockatiels love to receive love and if they feel loved they will return it. I can spend so much time giving a neck massage to Kósmos and all this time he closes his little eyes and purrs like a cat. Also, when it makes itself all pretty just for you, you can feel the love he has for you. However, like in all relation if don’t give love you don’t get love.
Play with your cockatiel
I’ve heard of (and I’ve seen on YouTube) cockatiels that enjoy playing games with their owners. Personally, I feel that Kósmos thinks I am laughing at him when I try to play with him and so he doesn’t want to play for too long. Anyway, I think if I spent more time making up games he likes he would be happy to participate.
